How to Fix an ATM8 Server That Keeps Crashing

ATM8 is a 350+ mod Forge 1.19.2 kitchen-sink pack, and most of its server crashes trace back to a handful of known causes — not a mystery mod conflict. See the how much RAM does an ATM8 server need guide for the full sizing breakdown before you chase anything else.

See the ATM8 pack page for boot-tested RAM data before you chase anything else.

1. Refined Storage overflow crashing the server on startup

A Refined Storage network crammed with too many items can crash the server before the world even finishes loading, because the client tries to render the whole network state at once. This is one of the most-reported ATM8 server crashes.

  • Load the server world in singleplayer, where the crash is usually survivable long enough to open the storage terminal.
  • Dump or clear out the overflowing items quickly before it crashes again.
  • Going forward, split one giant Refined Storage network into smaller subnetworks instead of one network holding everything.

2. Tick taking longer than 60 seconds

If the server crashes a few minutes after startup rather than immediately, check the log for a tick-timeout warning. A single tick running past the watchdog's 60-second limit force-kills the server — it isn't a crash so much as a safety stop.

Fix: run a region fixer with a conservative entity cap on the world to clear overloaded chunks, and look for an autocrafting loop or entity farm sitting in the same area as the slow tick.

3. Rubidium / Oculus conflicts

Rubidium and Oculus are rendering and shader-support mods. On a dedicated server they do nothing useful — there's no screen to render to — and some combinations are known to cause startup crashes on the server side specifically.

Fix: remove both from the server's mods folder. Clients keep them installed locally; only the server copy needs to go.

4. Corrupted Comforts config

A handful of reported launch crashes traced back to a malformed config file for the Comforts mod (sleeping bags / hammocks), usually after a manual mod update or a bad pack re-sync.

Fix: delete the Comforts config file and let it regenerate on the next clean boot.

5. RAM under the pack's realistic floor

ATM8's own recommendation is a 10 GB floor, not the 4-6 GB a vanilla server gets away with. Below that, you'll see slow, cascading crashes rather than a single clean error — GC pauses that look like lag, then a tick timeout, then a full crash.

If you've ruled out the four causes above and still see instability, RAM is almost certainly the next thing to check.

FAQ

Why does my ATM8 server crash on startup saying I need more RAM even at 10+ GB?+

That exit-code-1 message is sometimes a symptom, not the real cause — a bloated Refined Storage network or a Spark profiler leak can exhaust the heap long before 350+ mods normally would. Rule those out before adding more RAM.

What causes ATM8 to crash shortly after the world finishes loading?+

A single tick taking over 60 seconds, usually from an overloaded Refined Storage autocrafting network or a chunk with too many entities. Running a region fixer with an entity cap, or pruning the storage network, resolves it.

Is Rubidium or Oculus the problem on a dedicated server?+

They can be — both are primarily client-side rendering mods, and on some ATM8 server setups they cause startup crashes with no rendering benefit to a headless server. Removing them from the server's mods folder is safe.

Host ATM8 on hardware sized for its real floor

CoalHost starts ATM8 servers at the pack's measured 10 GB floor by default, with backups in place before anything risky like a Refined Storage prune.
