How to Host a Left 4 Dead 2 Server (2026 Setup Guide)

L4D2 is a light engine with hard player caps baked in — hosting it well is about campaigns and SourceMod, not RAM math. Here's how to get a 4-player campaign night or a 4v4 Versus server running without wasting resources on it.

1

Know the vanilla player caps before you size anything: 4 players in campaign/co-op modes, 8 (4v4) in Versus and Scavenge — the same caps Valve's own matchmaking uses. A 4-player campaign night is the starter case; 4v4 Versus with SourceMod is the common upgrade.

2

Don't over-buy RAM — L4D2's server is a light 32-bit srcds build. 4GB runs classic campaign nights comfortably, 6GB is the comfortable Versus + SourceMod plan, and the engine can't use much more than about 4GB of heap regardless, so bigger tiers wouldn't buy you anything the process could touch.

3

Install community campaigns through the file manager into left4dead2/addons. Once there, they survive updates and come back with every restore — no need to re-download after every patch.

4

Add SourceMod and plugins the same way, into left4dead2/addons. Mutations and custom mutators live there too, backed up with everything else.

5

Skip the Steam Game Server Login Token unless you want browser visibility. Direct IP join (connect your-ip:27015) always works without one — a free token from steamcommunity.com/dev/managegameservers additionally lists the server in the in-game browser, and you can add one later from the panel.
