How to Host an FTB Academy Server (Forge 1.12.2 Guide)
FTB Academy is the official FTB beginner modpack, built on Forge 1.12.2 to teach new players how modded Minecraft works through a structured in-game quest guide — starting with basic tools, moving into automation, then introducing more complex systems. It's deliberately lighter than most other FTB packs, which keeps its RAM floor at 3GB instead of the 6-8GB+ that heavier destination packs need.
Start your server plan at FTB Academy's own recommended RAM floor of 3GB. Because this is a teaching pack rather than a destination pack, it skips the heavy automation and processing mod stacks found in Direwolf20 or Enigmatica, so it runs comfortably on far less RAM than most other FTB packs.
Import FTB Academy directly from the pack list (CurseForge or the FTB App) instead of trying to rebuild the server from a client export. A direct import guarantees the server pulls the exact mod list and quest book version the client is running, which matters a lot for a pack built around guided progression.
Watch the server logs on first boot until Forge finishes loading every mod and FTB Quests initializes without errors. FTB Academy's entire teaching structure runs through its in-game quest book, so if that layer doesn't load cleanly, new players lose the guided path the pack is built around.
Only invite players once you've confirmed a full clean startup with no mod load errors in the log. Letting beginners join a server that's still crash-looping during the tutorial stage is the fastest way to sour someone's first modded Minecraft experience.
Take a backup before importing a different world, updating the modpack version, or changing configs. Players progress through FTB Academy's quest line in order, so a corrupted or rolled-back world means new players have to redo onboarding steps they already completed.
Use a cleaner FTB Academy path
CoalHost is built around modpack hosting, which makes FTB Academy much less annoying to launch correctly.
