Minecraft Server TPS and Tick Lag Explained

Minecraft targets 20 ticks per second, one every 50ms. TPS is the average players feel; MSPT is the number that actually tells you what's wrong.

Running a heavy modpack instead of vanilla? The same diagnosis applies — see the RLCraft pack page.

What TPS and MSPT actually mean

  • 20 TPS = healthy, 50ms per tick is the budget.
  • TPS below about 18 is noticeable to players as rubber-banding and delayed hits.
  • A single long tick (say, 500ms) can drop the TPS average for seconds without MSPT ever reporting it smoothly — MSPT is the raw number, TPS is derived and can hide spikes.

The usual causes, in order of likelihood

  • Entity count — mob farms, ticking items, dropped XP orbs.
  • Redstone contraptions — large clocks, observer chains running every tick.
  • Chunk loading from players spread far apart, or spawn chunks kept loaded unnecessarily.
  • Hopper or container-heavy auto-sorters.
  • Plugin or mod logic running every tick without caching its results.

Diagnose it properly before changing anything

Use /tick query on 1.20+ vanilla, or the spark profiler, to get a flame graph of what's actually eating tick time instead of guessing.

Vanilla servers have fewer mitigation options than Paper or Purpur, which expose tunable entity-activation-range settings where mod compatibility allows.

A single lagging chunk can tank a whole server's TPS even with a light player count — the cause is almost never 'too many players.'

FAQ

What TPS should a healthy Minecraft server run at?+

20 TPS is the ceiling and the target. Anything from about 19.5–20 is effectively perfect; below 18 players start to notice.

What's the difference between TPS and MSPT?+

MSPT (milliseconds per tick) is the raw measurement; TPS is the derived, capped average. MSPT shows spikes that an averaged TPS number can hide.

Does spark work on modded servers?+

Yes — spark ships as both a Paper/Spigot plugin and a Forge/NeoForge/Fabric mod, so it profiles vanilla, Paper and modpack servers the same way.

Will adding more RAM fix tick lag?+

Rarely by itself. RAM prevents out-of-memory crashes; tick lag is almost always a CPU-bound single-threaded bottleneck that a profiler like spark will show directly.

Run a server that doesn't rubber-band

CoalHost ships Aikar's flags and spark pre-installed on every Java server so you can see exactly what's eating tick time.
